Default Steering Wheel Repair

Mine is finally getting worn through. I am not in love with the idea of a wrap, making it thicker. Has anyone refinished one? Or, know what would be appropriate paint or whatever the finish is? Its the all black one and has worn to the foam at the top. I was thinking about using a leather filler paste on the foam to fill in the cracks, smooth it out and repaint it.

Any opinions on this idea?

Sounds like it will be tricky to get good results, so maybe a waste of time compared to procuring a good used replacement. Lots are available.

Upholstery shop can replace it, or you can diy, or you can easily just swap with a good used one from ebay.

I can chime in / been to this rodeo.

Lots of companies can redo steering wheels and make them good, but few can make them look perfect to match what the factory did. Depends on your standard.

The issue with D2 wheels, and making them look perfect... is the perforations, and sourcing that leather with the exact perforation pattern or being able to punch it into leather. You can easily get a D2 wheel recovered in normal leather, even two tone (depending on your year), non-perforated. It’s the perforations that are the issue.

There’s a company in Texas who as of 2022 could match the perforated steering wheels on D2’s. They did a Bahama Beige and dark grey/blackish for me Dallas Custom Steering Wheel. Note that the dark portion of the 99-02 wheels are not black leather, it’s a very dark ash grey.

Not cheap though. I paid like $800 bucks. It was a completely expensive proposition.

It’s only been on for a few years, but holding up quite well. I wanted Alpaca, but they explained that it would be tough to match.

I ended up giving it a go to repair the steering wheel. I looked around for one in much better shape and was not able to find one. I bought some leather repair creme from amazon and black gloss leather paint from Angelus. It turned out better than expected, I should get the gloss finish coat, but I will see how this holds up, it has been a couple of weeks. For $20 seems like a solid fix, only took about 30 minutes, including about 4 coats of paint.
