Strange Noise from Engine/ Belt?
Ok, I was driving slowly up the road with windows down, and heard a strange noise. It sounded like a hurt Seal or Sea lion. Errr, Errrr, Errrrrr- Yes, go ahead and laugh. :-) BUT- It does not do this in park at idle, or in drive with my foot on the brakes when giving it throttle/gas.
I am wondering if this is a belt issue, Power Steering issue or what. Any thoughts?
I also want to service my transmission with new filter and fluid. I got the filter kit, but wanted to know how much fluids a 01 D2 would actually take. The RAVE is not clear, and I obviously did not want to put too much in since the Torque Converter cannot be drained.
Lastly- How can I tell if my D2 is operating at the right temp? The needle is attached left to right, and it is always a little above 3 oclock. I know this is alot to ask, but I just wanted to make sure I am servicing properly.

are you sure it a err and not a tweet tweet tweet? tweet could be front ujoint.
there should be a sticky on doing the tranny service, I think it 4-5 quarts?
Factory gauge is useless you need to install something after market or check it at the OBDII port

I know it looks crazy, but yes it is an Err errrrr errrrrr sound. Not belt squeak.
So what do you recommend aftermarket for temperature? The engine just seems to "feel" hot even after a short time. Maybe it is just me. Just trying to err on the side of caution. We have a long road trip coming up and I do not want to end up on the side of the road and vacation ruined because of an unreliable car.
Any further help or suggestions are very welcome!

someone should jump in here, there is a gauge that everyone on this site seems to use.
I cant remember the name (ultra gauge maybe), I use my hawkeye. But there is a gauge you can mount that will give all kind of information.

Ultra Gauge - reads and resets OBDII engine codes, displays live data, and you can program alarm points. The factory heat gauge points at 50% from 130 - 240F, so you don't know overheating has begun until you are already in the land of repair and despair. About $70. And if you live where it gets hot in summr, consider the 180F thermostat, it will drop temps about 10F across the range. A bottle of Water Wetter coolant treatment is worth 2-3 degrees usually.
Note how both oem gauges read the same in two different trucks with two different temps......

The possibility of front drive shaft U joint issues shold not be ignored. If all joints are not greasable, it will dry out, snap with little warning, and thrash a hole in the transmission case. Rebuild before this happens (article in our tech area, $100), or replace with aftermarket.
So, has the front shaft been rebuilt or replaced, if not have it done before you drive it any more, or you may also be needing a tranny when the shaft fails.
As for fluid and maintaining your Disco, read my major service list and do it all.
