Hi guy's:

1996 discovery 95000kms new to me

the vehicle is stuck in drive. I can go down to third but nothing else.

anybody had this problem

Have you tried shifting gears from under the trk?
Have someone set the parking brake and hold their foot on the brake pedal, turn the key on and crawl under the trk, on the side of the trans is a lever that the gear selector connects to, move it by hand and see if it will go through all the gears.
If that works then it is jammed in the console.
You will need to disconnect the gear selector from the trans to check this.

Turned out to be C clip at the top of the shift lever. used existing one re&re
While console was out (unnecessarily) I swapped the front and back window switches
