Swap 2003 4.6 with a 2001 4.0

Default Swap 2003 4.6 with a 2001 4.0

What mods do I need to drop a 2001 4.0 into a 2003 body?
Connectors?
Computer issues?

Should be a direct swap. Betting your 03 has SAI. Does the 01? If yes, direct swap. If no you might have to swap the heads.

Thanks, Alex, they both have SAI; however, I'm fantasizing about removing it. If I had to live with a code on the dash, I'm good. Alaska has no inspections, and this Rover will never exit this proverbial island.

I actually took all mine out. There is a code I live with, but no other I'll effects. You just have to weld up the ends of the plugs that thread into the heads so they're sealed.

SAI isn’t that bad. As long as the vacuum lines are good, and the pump works it’s not a bad system really. 4.6L vs 4.0L = direct swap as both are SAI.

I want to got the opposite route 4.0 to a 4.6. My 4.0 is pathetic at towing a 1500 pound trailer.

The 4.6L with be pathetic at being reliable...... I had decent luck back when both my 03 D2’s were 2-3 years old. Now I have yet to find a 4.6L that isn’t ticking, knocking, over-heating, or with low oil pressure issues. 4.0L isn’t a HP monster, but from my 19 years of tinkering with the Bosch setup the 4.0L is much more reliable IMHO.

My current project (that I own) is an 04 that runs super cool, but has a low oil pressure issue at idle. She also smokes a bit under hi revs. It needs to be torn down, but I don’t have the time right now.

Another D2 I am working on for a friend had cylinder 5 misfires even after new wires/plugs/coils were installed. Once it warms up it knocks like it has a stuck lifter, rod, or valve issue & #5 cylinder misfires like crazy. Head gasket isn’t blown out so it’s sick. He just needs a hunting truck, but it’s just another 4.6L with a problem.

I wish these engines were more powerful and reliable. I got rid of my 92 Nissan Pathfinder with 188k miles on it for the 01 Disco with 58k miles on it. The Pathfinder only had 153hp., but it actually would tow a 2 place atv trailer better than my Disco does.

I did it with an 02 to an 04. No issue's.

After all that work (and money) on the 4.6 you've given up on it? Or is it faster to swap the 4.0?
