Im in need of new tires since the ones on it right now are old and dry rotting. I spend the majority of my time driving on the pavement, but since its a land rover I need to take it off road occasionally. Usually in the summer, I take it on dirt (sometimes a little muddy) roads to get to lakes, and in the winter sometimes it snows. I don't want to spend more than $600.
I'm thinking about getting these since I found it on sale.
Walmart also apparently sells tires. I found these, but they don't have the parallel groves which I assume are good for preventing hydroplaning when driving on wet pavement. Does the design make pavement driving worse? Are there other good places to get tires from? Are used tires a bad idea?
I see that they are all A/Ts but the Yokohama tire looks to be much more highway oriented and probably a lot quieter but I haven't got any experience with any of them.
The Yokohama's look good, I have also had good luck with Cooper AT's and sometimes WM or Discount Tire has good prices on those, might want to check those out for your application.
Are these snow rated? From my little knowledge I have of tires, you want to expel water in rain, but keep the snow in the treads in the snow (snow sticks to snow better than snow and rubber).
Used tires in my opinion would be a less than ideal ideas depending on the tire. Tires degrade over time, more so if they're in direct sunlight often. Used tires (depending on the condition you buy them in) will have less life in them in comparison, so you will have to replace them sooner. If you want to save a buck now and spend it later it could be a good idea.
Again this is extremely generalized. Used tires could have 100 miles to 30k+ miles, and the price will range on them too.
Also, some tires may have a warranty on them. So if you puncture them on the road (or offroad , but check the terms and condition ) they could cover the cost a replacement.
i ran Pirelli Scorpion AT Plus and really liked them. put them on several of my Discoverys. they did well both on and off road and handled the wet pavement better than any AT i had run previously.
now i'm running Hankook Dynapro AT2 Xtreme. stupid name, but they ride even softer on the road than the Pirellis and handle the snow and wet pavement great. did much better on the ice than my wife's LR4 in snow/ice mode with, admittedly, fairly worn street tires.
They keep selling out, so I would check every day until they have 4 in stock. They were at 3 in stock for a bit, but i checked multiple times a day for a few days and got some when they had more in stock.
I'd recommend ditching your current spare tire after seeing it IRL. With that wear pattern + age it's just a matter of time before it blows. Swap it with one of your current tires, ideally the one that is in the best condition. If you remind me, I'll bring the spare tire cover next time we meet.
Also, it looks like those tires were made back in 2021. Not sure how long tires should last and under what conditions.
