Default Top hat liner in one cyl... Good or bad

Want some expert opinions on this scenario.

Found an 04 Disco I'm supposed to fly out and buy tomorrow. Motor was completely "rebuilt". Talked to the shop who did the motor and was puzzled about the answer. The motor had a slipped liner so it was torn down and pressure tested. Block tested good so the slipped liner was replaced with a tophat and the remaining liners were pinned. They then completed the rebuild. Just sounds odd to me or would that be acceptable?

I would say it depends on how they removed the liner. If they heated the block to remove it, that might compromise the other liner's seating in the block. If they bored it out, probably OK. Either way, if it sounds good, runs good, has good compression, doesn't burn oil or have an overheat or leak issue, it's probably fine at least for a while. I wouldn't overpay just b/c the engine may have been rebuilt at some point, unless you get proof and a warranty from a trustworthy builder. Even then you could still have problems. That's why any used car only has a certain value; they're a gamble in that you might have to spend more to keep it running..

7 pinned + 1 top hat is better than 0 pinned and dang close to being as good as 8 top hats.

I've done fly and drive on 3 Rovers over the years. 1991 Range Rover Classic Hunter, 1983 Land Rover 110 and 2007 LR3. I'll be doing it again next month to bring home a different Range Rover Classic Hunter

Hi, D2's are as rare as 'popcorn in a kids show', they were the highest production run of any Landrover model by far, there are literally tens of thousands around the world. The ES 7 seater TD5 may, quote, may, become the most wanted D2 but it's unlikely. Amazingly, that's what I own
