Top hat liner in one cyl... Good or bad
Want some expert opinions on this scenario.
Found an 04 Disco I'm supposed to fly out and buy tomorrow. Motor was completely "rebuilt". Talked to the shop who did the motor and was puzzled about the answer. The motor had a slipped liner so it was torn down and pressure tested. Block tested good so the slipped liner was replaced with a tophat and the remaining liners were pinned. They then completed the rebuild. Just sounds odd to me or would that be acceptable?

I would say it depends on how they removed the liner. If they heated the block to remove it, that might compromise the other liner's seating in the block. If they bored it out, probably OK. Either way, if it sounds good, runs good, has good compression, doesn't burn oil or have an overheat or leak issue, it's probably fine at least for a while. I wouldn't overpay just b/c the engine may have been rebuilt at some point, unless you get proof and a warranty from a trustworthy builder. Even then you could still have problems. That's why any used car only has a certain value; they're a gamble in that you might have to spend more to keep it running..

flying out ?? Are these rovers starting to become rare or worth flying out ??
Not plentiful in central Florida. This is where ratty old disco's come to die. Going up to atl where they are common
I've done fly and drive on 3 Rovers over the years. 1991 Range Rover Classic Hunter, 1983 Land Rover 110 and 2007 LR3. I'll be doing it again next month to bring home a different Range Rover Classic Hunter
