No, it is a plug, just like the drain plug on the t/case or diffs.

not sure if yours is different than mine but the plug is actually at the rear of the transfer case. It is somewhat obstructed by the emergency brake drum that is attached to the driveshaft.

In other words...look for the rear-output shaft on the transfer case and the drain plug will be nearby. It's a 1/2" plug, not a bolt. You put in a regular old 1/2" ratchet extension into the plug and you should be able to back it out.

You need to drain and refill the transfer case as soon as you purchase a used Disco. 90w gear oil will do for Disco 1. Some prefer synthetic.

If you use full synthetic gear lube then replace it every 50,000 miles, if you use dino juice then every 30,000.
If you dont have any leaks then check the fluid level's every 3 months. If you have leaks then more often until you can get the leak fixed.
Do this to both the front and rear differentials and the transfer case.
To check the fluid level in all three componets you will need a 1/2" rachet, there is a "fill" plug on the top of each, remove the plug, stick your finger straight into the hole, if you can feel the fluid on your finger then you are full.
The "drain" plug is on the bottom of each.
Most quick lubes will do a "4x4 driveline sevice", which is change the fluids in all three componets, for around $60.
When you first buy your trk you should assume that the fluids have never been changed no matter what the mileage.
Does that answer your question?
