Default Transmission exposure limit?

I am halfway through changing out my transmission filter and came across 2 problems:

1. Snapped a retaining bolt, then snapped the clamp so I could get the pan off.
2. The filter kit from NAPA doesn't include the big o-ring

I just ordered replacements from roversnorth, but they will take a couple days to get here. Can I leave the transmission exposed till the parts arrive or should I cover it back up with the pan?
