Default transmission issue...

my transmission works fine except for one thing... its a 97 d1 with 152000 miles and the issue i have is that if i put it straight in drive, nothing happens, its like its in neutral, but if i shift it into first gear, it will work and then after i take off i can just put it in drive... once i slow back down and it goes to shift back into first at say a stop sign for example, it goes back to neutral... i have been told it is probably just a solenoid... easy enough, but where is this particular solenoid located... i have downloaded the rave manual but have not had a chance to put it on cd so i could view it... i will try to do that today, but if anyone knows off-hand where its located that would be great, or if you feel its a bigger issue feel free to let me know... thanks

Sounds like a one way clutch has failed... not a relay unfortunately and you're looking at a rebuild

Oh... wait a sec - have a look here:

Could be the sprag clutch apparently... To fix it is a rebuild, but it's a 'non damaging' fault if you continue to drive it as it is.

Cheers,

Before you do anything drastic, check the fluid level/condition. Is it bright pink? Doest it smell burnt? Does it feel gritty when you rub it between your fingres?

Well, now it is time to take it to a tranny shop and ask a few questions, let us know what you find.

Before you rush into a new tranny change the fluid in yours first. It is very easy to do, they even included a drain plug for you.
Go buy 6 quarts of DexronIII, get the High Miles stuff, drain out the old, refill with the new.
It wont take 6 quarts, but better to have more on hand than you need.
After 500 to 1000 miles change it again.
If there is no improvment then you are out $20 and a hour of your time.
