Default transmission issue it

I have a 96 disco. A few weeks ago while turning and accelerating from a stop, at about 5mph, there was an audable noise that sounded like something very small breaking. (heard to the right/front of the drivers seat. (LHD). immediatly the vehicle came out of gear. Effectively now: Drive, 3 and 2nd are the same as neautral. To get the vehicle into D, 3 or 2nd I have to first shift to 1st, accelerate to about 10mph or above, and then shift to any other forward gear. Likewise if I slow down below 10mph (approx) it will go back into 'neutral' and i'll have to repeat the process to get into drive.

Any advice?

It's possible that at the same time, I could no longer get it to engage 4Low forward (4Low reverse works fine.)

Help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Derek

The manual says that it is the #2 freewheel. How difficult is it to repalce that?
