Default Transmission Question

I am having my first big problem with my 2001 disco II....i've been lucky I guess. Anyway, my rover would not go into reverse the other day, so i parked it (on a hill). Went to cuss it out in the garage, came back and it went right into gear. so I checked the trans fluid, thinking it might be low...my burnt arm says otherwise. I was told by a local mechanic that it may not be the trans but actually a switch of some kind. I was just wondering if anyone had an idea of what's going on? the gear lights have been going off and on lately to.
thanks

He is talking about the XYZ switch.

And having the lights on the shifter turn on and off sounds a whole lot like that might be the problem.

But I'm not much of an auto transmission guy, so I'm sure others will chime in.

iF it wont go into reverse then its probably something slipping. Does the rpm counter go high when it won't go into reverse.

the rpms dont spike when I put it in reverse...well unless i press the gas. The car is sitting right now, but have been out a few times to start it again put it in gear and it is just fine. So i am lean more towards the XYZ switch at this point, but i need more input.

I just got the disco about a month ago, and I check the trans fluid before i bought it...it seemed good. I just changed filter and fluid a week ago.

It is not the XYZ switch.
Send me your number so we can talk, I think you are going off in the wrong direction. By the way, is your service engine light on?
