Transmission unusual delay in shifting
#21
Last fall i bypassed the TB heater because of gasket leak. That was reconnected but it seems that would have nothing to do with the shifting.
They also reset the ecu adaptive memory, forgot to mention that to Mike.
Either way its behaving normally again.

I have a '97 Disco with a similar but slightly different issue. When the Disco is cold (hasn't been driven in 8+ hrs) I have to drive at 30 kph for 4-5 min or run it up to 55-60 kph in order for it to shift into 2nd. Once it shifts the first time it's good to go. I live in Bahrain so it's hot. The person I bought if from changed out the valve body, the filter and flushed/refilled the tranny. Some of the other shift points can be a bit rough when the engine is still cold but they smooth out after 5-10 min. Any suggestions on what could be causing this? I'll be over here for a year so I'm not looking to invest large sums of money in it. Thanks.

Incorrect fluid perhaps, try drain and refill with exactly what is called for in the shop manual. Different fluid has different warm up characteristics, etc. If still rough, try adding a bottle of Lucas (see Lucas Transmission Fix : Lucas Oil). Will need to change fluid twice to reduce quantity of original trapped in the torque converter. You don't know if PO's mechanic addressed the quantity in the torque converter, which circulates by the pump, but does not drain into the sump. Fluid should be red, clear; not dark and full of particles, should not smell like burned coffee pot.

What ended up up being the solution to the problem you were having? I'm experiencing the same thing where it only shifts at 3500-4000 rpm and mechanics are giving me the run around.
Quick Update on my transmission shifting delay.
The temperature in Phoenix were well into the 100's last week, similar to when I first started having the issue.
I have not experienced the problem under the same conditions.
Previously it only happened under high air temps, stop and go driving and after the truck has been running for about an hour.
Thanks everyone for your input
