Default unusual stuck in Park problem - tried the usual fixes

Strange one here, 2004 Discovery - could really use some help and ideas...

daughter had a wreck backing out of our driveway while I was out of town (broke the bumper cover/reverse light/fog light on passenger side rear). Truck then stuck in park in middle of the street. had to get it towed back up into my driveway. when I got home, here's what I found.

No brake lights, checked the fuse - it was good, so I immediately thought it was the brake light switch. Replaced it - still stuck in park and still no brake lights.

then tried to jumper the 2 outside wires on the brake light switch wires - same lack of results.

I pulled the shifter cover and can physically depress the solenoid to get it into gear but don't have any brake lights.

Any suggestions? I feel like I'm missing something obvious? seems like it could be related to the accident but I can't figure it out. help!

forgot to mention that I also disconnected/reconnected the battery (the equivalent of rebooting microsoft windows when all else fails). didn't do anything though.

Have you replaced the broken brake light bulbs?

the brake light assembly wasn't damaged (just the reverse light/fog lamp down in the bumper assembly). I did replace those though just in case.

Perhaps brake light cables (wires) are (were) shorted? Check fuses? F20, F21, F25 under dash, F13, F3 underhood.

Main thing is that offspring is OK, despite the cost of the driving school tuition....
