So switching it out to the Royal Purple 10w40 would be suggested? Also what type of oil filter is recommended? I read somewhere about the K&N filter.

 

If you can afford the Royal Purple go for it, I use Shell Rotella, 15w-40 for summer and 5w-40 for the winter here in MI.
I use NAPA and Purolator oil filters, no way in hell am I spending $15 on a piece of crap K&N oil filter.

Wow thanks for all of the information! I really appreciate it, I am going to get on changing my oil out this weekend. That's what I get for taking it to a shop, they also broke the hinges on my air cleaner box

 

The hinges on the air cleaner box are a very common thing to break on the DII, so common you have a very hard time finding a used air cleaner box.
