Default Weird whistling noise

Hey all. I am not mechanically inclined but have enjoyed working on my 2003 Disco. Anyway, for some time now the engine has this weird whistle that almost sounds like a pulley needs to be greased or something. It increases in volume when the gas is punched and is barely audible at idle.

Is this likely something major or a minor nuisance that I can fix?

Sorry, I know the description is vague. It's hard to explain. Sometimes it's barely there at all and not noticeable. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Could be a leaky exhaust manifold gasket or even the intake manifold leaking. My TD5 suffered a warped exhaust manifold, a common problem, which started with a whisle for some months and after a few months got far louder until a pal who owns a garage checked it out and discovered the problem.

To all Td5 owners; replace the studs on the exhaust manifold as well! Preferably with bigger ones that won't shear off. Those manifolds warp over time and bust the studs off, contributing to the problem you all describe.

To the OP; does the noise continue after the engine is shut off? On the assumption you have a diesel, it could be the centrifugal oil filter. They spin at around 15,000 rpm and spin down after the car is off. When they wear they can make a strange noise, too.

No it is not a diesel. And the noise disappears once the engine is shut off. It is a spinning whistling sound if that makes sense that intensifies as the gas pedal is depressed. It's almost non-existent at idle.

I'll second that, warps manifold and tears the studs out or shears them off. Worth fitting larger dia heavier studs. Never fit a new manifold as it will also warp sooner or later so get the old manifold machined flat which is also far cheaper and will never warp again ................. (famous last words).

Not sure if you have checked or not, I had the same whistling noise only when driving. It turned out to be a bad ujoint on my front driveline that had come apart. Good thing I had an extra driveline!
