Haha, knackered might be a little too mild of word to use when describing that U-Joint.


Just FYI it's one of those "Tom Wood’s Gold Seal Universal Joints" too.

 

Did a tune-up for a friends 06 Dodge Caravan. I HATE transverse mounted engines!

 

Oof.. dan those suck. Try one on a 1999 3000 gt vr4. Talk about hell.

Did you notice any vibrations before it went? Any damage to your underside?

 

Couldn't feel a thing surprisingly. I only noticed it when I pulled it during my oil change to grease it. Fortunately no damage.

I personally haven't had the best of luck with my Tom Woods drive shafts. This is the second one they have sent me, over the course of time this is now my second failed U-Joint and I've also had the centering ball fail. I can't grease it anymore than I already do. :\

 

I have the BP Utah one, I love it so far, its brand new though. It has spicer 1310's and a GREASABLE CENTER BALL!

 

I have one too. Mine got a vibration around 4k miles and I sent it back and they said I had a completely dry u-joint and that they'd replace it this time. 4K MILES! I got it back and now have a different vibration. Took it off and on twice and the vibration followed.

They said that it must be something with my rover because their builder made sure to check it closely, but I could ship it back and have them check it again. It cost me almost $30 to ship each time, that adds up on a college kid. Still can't decide what to do about it.

 

Rebuilt the subwoofers tonight by installing new foam edging where the old foam had completely rotted away with time...

Ordered the replacement foam from Simply Speakers - Official Speaker Repair Page - Speaker Parts and Repair Service

If you ask them, they will tell you that they don't have foam for the Harman/Kardon speakers, but these fit perfectly... I took measurements of the old foam, the cone and the speaker frame and compared them to the different foams that they offer and found one with the same measurements.

I installed them tonight and they sound great... Very happy that I did this...







I ordered the whole repair kit which includes the foam rings, instructions and the appropriate glue. I ended up with a bunch of glue left over, so I could probably do 20 more subs... (40 total 6 1/2" speakers).

It was $24.99 delivered.

You can go cheaper by ordering just the foam rings and use your own glue, but I wanted the repair to last. I know some people have used Elmer's glue, but that stuff gets really brittle and I'm not sure how well it would bond with the polypropylene cones on my H/K subs, so I spent the extra money to get glue specially designed for speaker repair.

The entire repair (I already had my subwoofer out of the Rover) took about 3 hours, but some of that was just waiting for glue to dry. It's pretty straight forward and there is a good repair video on their website that will show you the basic steps.

I buttoned the entire thing back up tonight and sat in the garage and listened to the radio for a while. I forgot how nice that system sounds when it's all working like it is supposed to...
