well, I don't know what to think. I just got home and the light has never shown itself, again. the only thing that changed was lowering fluid level. so, I think it was, in fact, an evil robot voodoo light trick. just to keep me on my toes.

does anyone know the proper temp range for the fluid? I may do a little more investigation.

From RAVE:

An oil temperature switch is fitted to V8 engine models up to 03 Model Year. In the event of the transfer box oil approaching maximum recommended working temperature of 145°C (293°F), the switch will close and a warning lamp in the instrument pack will be illuminated.

Tranny oil cooler :

A temperature sensor on the RH end tank provides the instrument pack with an input of transmission fluid temperature. If the temperature exceeds a preset limit, the instrument pack illuminates the transmission temperature warning lamp. The warning lamp remains illuminated until the temperature of the fluid returns within limits.

I did not see a temp spec for the range of the tranny fluid.
