Wrong, wrong, wrong, no, no, no...yes a DI shifter and linkage from a DI will fit, they may not have any '04 CDL's in stock but why spend $700 for a $300 part if you wait a month or two?
There have been others who have put a DI CDL shifter and linkage into a DII.
Ask DiscoMike, he will confirm this.

I need to add that the only difference between your 1999 DII transfer case and my 1997 DI transfer case is that I have the CDL hooked up from the factory.

Speaking of CDL kits....

What about the AMV electronic locking setups they use Down Under?
http://www.amv.com.au/SeriesIIDifflock.htm

I get the appeal of having it be just like the factory setup in the '04, but come on it's a pretty simple thing....

I need to clarify this...the only difference in the CDL is that mine came hooked up from the factory and yours did not.
The t-cases are different, not by much, but they are.

Its Ashcroft Transmissions "own" version of the D2 linkage setup and they did well to come up with a linkage that is almost the same as the D2a factory one.

A D1 linkage as stated DOES fit, I have added on to my friends '99' TD5, how ever, there is a negative side to the D1 setup, because its a "fixed" linkage and its bolted driectly on the transfer case it transmits more "vibration" / noise into the cabin, not a massive amount and to be honest I could live with it, but its worth mentioning,

You MUST also get a linkage for an Auto FROM an auto and vice versa for a manual as they are mounted differently. You will also have to buy the transmission tunnel "gaiter" and modify it to fit the D2.
