I use the sport mode all the time when I'm driving on rolling hills and mountain passes...sloppy described it perfectly...the higher RPMs and less frequent shifts seems to keep the disco in a good powerband...and if I need to accelerate and pass a slower moving vehicle, I get a quicker throttle response (insert disclaimer here...this is a LR )...gas mileage using sport mode is about the same as not using it...12-13 city, 16-17 hwy.

I drove in "Spot Mode" all day today after reading this thread. I went to the gas station once this morning and again this evening. Lesson learned, no more Sport mode for me. Unless, I passing a prius or one of those little stupid "smart" cars. Then again, willl I actually need to use Sport Mode to pass 'em?

Seriously?

A new DII 4.0 did a published 10.3 0-60. A 2010 Prius does a 10.1.

Get a grip. It's an off road vehicle, not a car. It's big, it's heavy, it's slow, it's old, it's not worth much. It can easily go faster than its actually safe to drive.

Thats why I drive the 2003 4.6 217 HP, makes a difference, when you need to drop the Prius, cement truck or the crappy Explorer. Then again my oil pump may emplode, at anytime, but its a risk I take...that has been good so far...in my 4 years of ownership.

The Disco II might do 0-60 in 10 seconds but remember that when you are on the highway and you are going to pass a car the disco is not at a stand still. When you are going 55 and have to go up to 70 to pass a car it isn't as bad as people put it. I have never had a problem passing someone.
