Default WTB Land Rover Discovery D2 and need some advice

Found a pretty sweet looking 2001 D2 on craigslist and it got my wheels turning on making a potential buy.

LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 2 | SE7 | LAND ROVER | 2001

Some background.

I currently ride in an 01 Jeep XJ that's been lifted 3.5in and has a few other light mods.

I've been wanting to jump to a Discovery for awhile, because I like the ride(had a friend who had one) and it seems more comfortable than the Jeep.

I know little about these vehicles themselves. Work on all my vehicles myself so mechanically knowledgeable. I don't imagine this would downgrade my mileage much as my Jeep barely etches out 13mpg.

Anyways, thanks for the help. Also I'd say my budget is at the top end about 5K.

yes much more comfy. pretty straight forward to work on.
that 01 falls in a tcase changeover year. 1st part had locking center differential ability, 2nd part open only (unless you swap all or front assembly of transfer case)
also 141k is getting up there in miles. I see no mention of head gasket job. ( on average, they are going or gone by then)

When do the engines normally take a dump?

I've got two vehicles where the engines are known to have a life that exceeds 300K miles.

you can get the miles out of them.....but with good maintenance and a knowledge that head gaskets a little shorter life expectancy, than other engines. the roverv8 hates overheating.

Seriously, with those kind of miles, you're looking at a $3k vehicle. Check CL; there's a guy in the Glendale/Burbank area that will do the HGs for like $800.

Ok my opinion, that one is not bad but too much $$. Agree 3-3.5k max
Try to find a 04 for CDL.
V8 Motors are the weak link on these....basically they are all Timebombs due to ancient much less than perfect design....most are or will be plagued with multi problems. Very very few are well maintained and trouble free.
HG, oil pumpgears and slipped liners are most common issues. Overheating simply amplifies the terminal end.
Try to find one that is already outfitted like this one but someone has replaced with a Top Hat lined rebuilt shortblock . Look at GPR or Cannibal or Turner for quality rebuilt motors.

here is better one

Looks nice. I agree it's bit overpriced, but don't give up on it yet. Asked for service records/history. If there's no paperwork, take it with a grain of salt. And make an offer based on your concerns. Also spend the money and have a shop look it over before you buy one.

Don't be shy about making an offer....what's the worst that can happen?
