I would have left it.
I have dropped a small screw into a carb before, it rattled for a few minutes then once it melted all was good.
Plastic would have been gone in no time flat.

It's defintely funny, I laugh about it probably because I was able to get it out. A definite lesson learned on the straws though.

I watched a guy working next to me at Mitsubishi drop a 1/4in washer down an intake runner. He figured it would do the same as you described. Didn't work for him, engine developed a "death knock." He ended up pulling the cyl. head and fixing it the hard way on his own time - unpayed ofcourse.

Bet your screw was pretty small.

Something about that little straw (I usually loose them before I get to use them) flying off and going into the engine still makes me laugh. Maybe it's just because I have the same kind of luck.

for that reason I dont even bother with that little straw... but thats just me
