I own a 2005 Freelander and last year in March took it in for a Diagnosis and they made me pay $534 to fix something dealing with the sparkplugs. 2 Months later the vehicle was doing the samething, took it back for another look and then the whole engine needed replace because coolant was getting into engine..

The original owners most likely suckered you into buying it because they knew the engine was about to have serious problems.. I paid to have the engine fixed and everything else that falls apart on it, at least 3 times a year it's in the shop for something serious, after the engine got replaced.

 

Sounds exactly what mine does. Let me know what you find out.
