Default 03 Range Transmission problem?

My 03 range rover suddenly stopped on me in the middle of the freeway. I noticed a loud screeching type sound soI pulled over right away. Range turns on and off with no problem, but putting it in either Drive or Reverse causes the same sound once again. I get a message that says place car in neutral on the dash. Anybody have any idea what might have happened? Also, if it is the transmission, any idea what I am looking at cost wise to get this fixed? I would appreciate any feedback.

What happens when you put your truck in drive besides the noise, will it move? Are you sure it is the tranny and not a bad diff or the t/case?

Thanks for your reply DiscoMike.. The truck won't move at all, it just makes that loud noise. I had it towed home for now, I'm at a loss as to what could be wrong. I've had the range for less than 2 months so I don't know if this is a common problem or not.

It is not a common issue with Rovers, please let us know what they find and if you have any questions as to the diagnoises or charges.
