Question 1998 range rover 4.0 wont start

My RR won't start. Was thinking bad gas. It starts sometimes but then it those days when it will turn but it won't start up. I check the fuel pump relay but removing the gas cap and switching the car on and heard the humming sound so the fuel pump relay is good. So is it just bad gas or the fuel pump itself? Any ideals on troubleshooting?

Could be CKP (crank postion sensor) which controls spark. When it does this you could check for spark with a spare plug, or one of those $8 spark testers from auto parts store, looks like an ink pen, hold it next to spark plug wire and it flashes when high volts pulse (no shock hazard to you or SWMBO). If no spark, CKP is certainly suspect.
