Default 1998 Range Rover Stuck In ParK

I have a 1998 range rover hse and last night i was driving it i was pulling reverse out of a parking lot . When i went to put it in drive it seemed like it went into neutral and then into drive. it felt like the stick was not in sync with the gears how they apppear on the panel . Later that night i was driving home and i pulled reverse again and when i went to put it in gear it just went into park . The stick would move up and down threw all the gears and even into the low setting gears but the car wouldnt leave park. The tires were locked up and I didnt know what to do. I got the truck towed back to my house becuase i didnt know if it was a major problem or something small i could fix on my own

I didnt think it was a major tranny problem because it was working perfect while i was driving with no signs of having a tranny problem . Even untill the event when it was stuck in PARK

So i look on the internet and they say check all my fuses under my passenger seat . I did that and they look all fine . ( IS THERE MORE FUSES TO CHECK UNDER THE HOOD THAT MIGHT AFFECT THIS ??????? )

They say it could be the brake switch. So i hit my breaks to see if my rear lights go on and they do . I dont know if that is the right wayt to test the switch or not or if that even has anything to do with the switch working or not . ( ANYONE ???? )

ANY HELP WOULD BE AMAZING < THANKS EVERYONE AHEAD OF TIME . This is the only real problem Ive had with my Range since I got it . HOPEFULLY it doesnt need a new tranny

Thanks

Definitely sounds like a brake switch problem. It's not just the switch that works the tail lights and brakes themselves, but it's the one that's actually linked to your tranny!

thanks wolf , but if it was the switch would i still be able to move the stick up and down the gears once the truck is on . It wont let me do that when the truck is off. but when i turn the truck on and put my foot on the brakes it lets me move the gears back and forth . If my foot is off the brakes when the car is on it wont let me move it out of gear .... SO basically what im saying is the truck knows that my foot is on the brakes while the truck is on . , maybe thats just one of the safty electrical things that is working and the other one that is actually letting the gears sync with the stick isnt .

thanks for your help

Anyone else ?

OH YEA WHERE SHOULD I ORDER THE SWITCH FROM ???? LAND ROVER or is there a site that would work the same and be cheaper.

you need to get under the truck, its mechanical... most likely your shift cable is loose in your trans selector... if you can start the car, do it, raise it up to off road height and on the drivers side of the trans, youll see the shift cable going onto a lever, it should be tight, get someone to be in the truck, ahve the parking brake on, and make sure they have a solid foot on the brakes, and have them shift is, watch the lever/cable, if the cable moves and the lever does not, you need to fix that, may just need to be tightend, but if your not sure, take a picture or two and show someone that knows what theyre looking at

thanks Roverguy.
I was messing around with it today . I checked all the fuses and they all looked fine . My rear brake lights work and i hear a click when i step on the brakes and try and put it in gear.
I hear a click from the switch behind the pedal a click vibration on the auto gear shifter and maybe a click coming from under the passenger seat . Not sure about the third one.
I checked the volts on my battery when on and they were at 14.0 so that should be good . .once i step on the brakes the gear shifter feels really sloppy not the usually hard solid motion i was use to while it was working right

It goes threw the motions like there was a gear there but something just doesnt feel right .
\\
Im gonna check under the car like you said tomorrow and see what it looks like .
DO YOU HAVE A PIC OF THE PART I SHOULD BE LOOKING AT ????? I have never been under the Range and have no idea what i should be looking at .

THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR HELP

any more info would be greatly helpful

if the picture thing is working, then like this... check and make sure that the cable is in the lever, and that the lever is tight to the shift shaft comming out of the trans

thanks alot roverguy for the pic . I have a feeling it is the cable . I started to get a loose sloppy feel to the stick , and if you think about it , it makes sense that it would be loose or maybe even broken. I def ruled out the brake switch with all the info i have on the problem . Ill let you know tomorrow when i get under the car . Hopefully it is just tightening some under the rover , and i dont have to take a part the shifter and center consol.

If the cable is broken where is a good place to get the cable , I was searchin around and i only found the cable with the shifter included

Roverguy you were dead on. It was just the cable was out of the little lever . I popped that sucker in and that was it . Went back in the car and it was all working .
I knew it right when i saw it . Wish i would have known that when i was stuck in the middle of a crime infested city at 3 am in the morning and had to wait till 830 in the morning for the wheel dollys to come. New problem is the radio doesnt work now. and when i pressed a botton on my radio my sunroof opened . I hope i didnt cause another huge problem with my electrical .

either way the thing drives now . thanks a lot

YOU WERE A HUGE HELP ...

if the little rod came out of the lever on the trans, you need to put a new cotter pin into the back side of the rod, or else it will happen again
