Default 2004 Disco Tranny/Transfer case

I have an '04 disco and developed a grinding type noise that I think is coming from the transfer case. in the small transfer case gear shifter it is slightly detectible. I removed the front drive shaft and I dont hear the grinding any more. Makes me wonder if it is the transfer case at all? may be the front differential? No way to just put it into just 2 wheel drive (rear drive) that I can tell. Thoughts anyone?

On an 04 you can lock the center differential then you can drive it with one driveshaft. Take the high-low lever move it into neutral then pull it to the left and back into high. Don't forget to put it back to unlocked when you put the front driveshaft back in.
