Default Cant get dip stick into the tube

So the SES light in my discovery 2 is broken and I didnt realize that I had almost no oil in it, which was a separate issue itself. When I went to check the oil I was unable to get the dipstick into the tube all the way. There is a metal piece I cant seem to get it past. Idk if this is a new issue because I only recently bought it used. I got a full inspection and had other work done but they never mentioned anything about this. Anyone know what it could be? Pic attached.

Also excuse my ignorance in responding to any follow up questions or comments. I'm still learning about cars and all the parts.

The dark part is a flatish metal piece that has a gap, but when i stick the dip stick under the edge it wont go any farther. I tried a all around, and tried angling the dipstick by bending it but i just couldnt manage to get it in and didnt want to break it.

What you have in your picture is the spot to fill the oil. I have circled it in RED in my picture.

The dipstick is shown in the proper position circled in GREEN.
