chirping noise when accellerate
#11
Sai= secondary air injection only on some of these trucks. It will be located on passenger side of engine compartment. It is an emissions device. It makes a noise, loud like hair dryer sometimes. I was curious if that could make some chirps. Just to see if that can be eliminated as a source.

Basically if your driveshaft goes out while you're driving the costs can be over a couple grand. This is due to the potential damage that is caused by this happening while you're driving on the road, and typically it happens when you're driving fast. The chirping sound can be an indicator that the driveshaft is getting ready to go, so at this point you would want to replace it before it actually breaks on you while you're driving. The cost at fixing it before it breaks is in between 300-600 with parts and labor. Not to confuse you though, I am 110% certain that Dusty1 is much more knowledgeable on the subject then I am, so it sounds like the front driveshaft is not the issue.
The chirping that you're speaking of I have heard on cars that have older serpentine belts (the black belt under your hood that you can see running like a snake around the circular pulleys). It can also be the pulleys themselves as they too can wear over time and need to be replaced. My mothers car use to make a chirping sound also. I would pour a little bit of soapy water on the belt (both sides) while the car was running and this would make the chirp go away. Eventually she had to replace her serpentine belt as the chirp came back. I hope you get it figured out, although it sounds like you will. Your Disco got itself a lucky owner. Whoever said that girls don't take care of their cars? Break the stereotype :-).

re chirping noise
Took Rover to a recommended mechanic. He welded a crack in the catalytic converter and also replaced the manifold gasket on the driver side. Picked up when the mechanic was not there. Drove home without windows open as it is winter time. When I got into town I did open window and heard the noise as loud as it ever was. Called mechanic. He is going to order additional gaskets for what I do not know and check the weld. What I am wondering is, "don't mechanics drive vehicles after repair to make sure the repairs are complete???"
Argh! Will update after next trip to mechanic. Hope he doesn't plan to charge me for incomplete work.

Pretty ridiculous but somehow I'm not surprised. I had huge issues with my past car and mechanics. I just don't understand how he wouldn't have taken the car out before releasing it and of course you aren't reimbursed for your time. I just recently changed the clamps on my three radiator hoses and accidently spilled some antifreeze on my serpentine belt and a couple of the pulleys. I unfortunately started to hear a chirp or squeak coming from my pulleys from what I believe was me spilling the coolant when I changed the clamps on the hoses. I noticed the chirp sound was louder and more noticeable when I would accelerate. Luckily it just went away today however my service engine soon light came on. Now I'm purchasing a cheap diagnostic tool to see what the light is. Please do keep us updated on your Rover. Hope everything is ok with it.

I've blown a gasket!
Just heard from mechanic today after second time there. Chirping noise still there. He is not going to charge me for this go around. Shouldn't as far as I am concerned. I already paid him close to $300 bucks for nothing.
Your guess is probably right...blown head gasket is what mechanic thinks. Will pick up and park at home until I decide on what to do. It's getting too pricey and wondering if I should junk it. Bummer! I really like the way it drives but too "chirpy" when I drive it and embarrassing.

Darn, I was going to chime in that it was the front drive shaft U-joints going bad. This happened on our rig. I couldn't duplicate the noise when it was sitting still. but as soon as I would drive it was there. And it WAS a distinct 'chirping' sound. I replaced the U-joints and problem solved.
Sorry, this would definitely NOT be the problem, if you have the chirping WHILE the vehicle is sitting still.

With heavy heart I have decided to either give my 2000 Disco II to a local auto body shop who will come pick up for free or give to a local guy who wants to try and fix the blown head gasket...if that is what it turns out to be in the end. somehow I don't want to give to local guy who may fix and drive around where I can see "my" car being driven without me in the drivers seat. I am sad!
