Default Front diff or transfer case

I have a 95 discovery that needs some TLC atm. I was driving it when it sounded like some plastic being dragged under the car at low speed. I looked and couldn't see anything. Continued driving around a round about when the noise came back and then the car stopped. The engine was still running and in gear it felt like it wanted to drive but something was stopping it from moving. I have jacked it up on stands and there is a little play in the front shaft, none in the rear. When I turn the front wheels, they turn independently. Is this normal? What should I look for next?

Maybe your TC popped out of Hi into Neutral?

Thanks fishEH. It did do that too. I emptied the transfer case on the weekend and found there wasn't much oil in there. Filled it back up and the noises that I was hearing have gone. Still have it up on the stands atm but at least all four wheels turn. Not sure if I have done any damage to it yet. Guess I will find that out when I take it for a drive. What would cause it to pop into neutral from high? Should I be looking for something else too?
