I have a 98 discovery with 99k miles on it and when I took it offroading and got it wet it doesn't shift properly. it has to dry and slowly fix itself before it can shift out of first gear. why is this? any help is appreciated thanks

 

Unless you got water into the transmission getting it wet has nothing to do with it.
Have you checked the transmission fluid level?
Truck on level ground, engine idling, trans in park.
Pull dipstick, should be above the "low" mark.

 

On my land rover I have a shifting problem as well. Mine Is a 97 Disco and I have to let off of the gas pedal sometimes to get it to shift into the next gear. The trans fluid has never been changed and since it hasn't I have been told not to change it.

 

Not having ever changed it also means filter will be clogged. IMHO you should locate an indy shop that does the BG 44 transmission fluid flush (or another high quality product). This can flush out a lot of the old gunk in the tranny that a regular change at this point would simply break loose (to clog filter and cause more problems). see BG Findashop - Search for an authorized BG service center near you!

 

That is a total load of BS, the whole reason you are having trans problems is because the fluid has never been changed.
Have the fluid and filter changed and then have a trans power flush done.
It is a old wive's tale to never change the fluid in a old transmission, would you never change the engine oil because you went over due on the last one?
it is your truck, have it changed, if they wont do it tell them you do not want a warranty, you just want the work done.

Um, it is fuel injected, no carb.
