Default HELP! 'Check Engine' lights up!!

Hello all

I hope someone out there can give me some valuable advice as I am at the end of my tether…

I have a N reg Discovery TD 2.5 automatic…

The ‘Check Engine’ warning light appears and looses all power but the engine seems to be still running…

This tends to happen more often when I driving approx. 20-30 mph or when I am accelerating for the first time.

It got a re-condition engine put in about 3 months ago…and according to my local mechanic the engine and gearbox is fine and they have literally given up all hope ……so the problem remains a mystery!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is definitely causing me some concern as I’ve experienced a number of problems with this 4x4 but nothing like this….Help…anyone??!!

The check engine light is an emissions system trouble indicator.
You will need to have someone scan the computer for trouble codes, and go from there.
That light should say "check computer", since that is really what it monitors.
You probably have a bad O2 sensor or a bad coolant temp sensor.
Those are the most common ones.

How do you change the 02 sensor? I have a check engine light and that was what my code was. I have a 2000 DII. Thanks for any advice! (Actually....my dash looks like Christmas! I have four warning lights! The trio and this one. When I run low on gas, that lights comes on and then my dash looks like the New York skyline) But, my truck keeps on ticking. (literally....I think I have a valve out of adjustment) Gotta love it!

So what does it take for you to realize you are not supposed to run the tank that low???
Why do you think you need to change your O2's, what codes have you gotten when scanning the engine, what is the mileage on the truck?
The trio lights can't be read with a regular scanner and once we figure out your engine related problems, I will walk you thru the Brake problem.

02 sensors typically have a male/female connector on one side, and the other side is threaded into your exhaust. If you can see the entire 02 sensor(s) you should be able to replace it. Sometimes they are hard to break loose. I'm not sure if they are a universal size, but they might be somewhere between 22-24mm.

When 02 sensors die, they get fouled out and don't work properly. It's not unusual to have to replace 02 sensors on (for example) older GM vehicles with over 100K miles.

I guess if I get a used Discovery I'll just buy some 02's and plan to swap them proactively. Does the truck have one or two?
