Default help required!!!

hello

i drive a 2005 freelander and of recent i am having problems with the cooling system.

while the temperature does not go past the half mark on the indicator, there is a back flow into the expansion tank causing it to overflow and spill over. do you have any ideas what the problem could be?

Thank you

Obi

clogged radiator, head gasket leak, bad thermostat, etc. You have more hose clamps under the hood than any Rover built I think. The heat gauge should not be trusted, use an OBDII scanner to read the actual temp. As an example, a Disco 2 will show 50% gauge reading, even though engine temp is anywhere from abiut 130 to 240F.

Could be looking at something as simple as a bad exp. tank cap, or too much water in the mixture...

And yeah, that gauge goes from normal to hot in about 4 degrees, but stays at normal for a good long time.

You need to figure out if you are over-pressurizing, for any number of reasons, or just can't hold the pressure in.

You can rent a pressure tester at a parts store, and put it on cold, with no pressure in the system, start it, and watch the pressure rise as it heats up. See what you get to, and don't push it past the cap rating, or ~15psi.
