Default New buyer looking for info (anything appreciated!)

Hey people.
I've posted in the intros thread and thought i'd post here with my couple of queries,
i've never really looked into the whole landrover side of things, but heres bound to be my best place to find out.
Basically, i'm looking to buy a defender, around the 94 kinda mark, mayb earlier. Not looking for a brand new shiny chromed up piece of fanciness. Just something that does the job.
Basically wanting to know, how much i'm looking to pay for something in good nick. What mpg is like, common faults etc etc.
I don't wanna spend a bomb, under 3grand would be ideal but, i'd push to 4 if it was worth it.
Thanks in advance.

I assume that you are in Europe.
Basically a Defender is a DI, all the running gear is the same so things to look for will be very similar.
As for pricing, here in the US a ratted up Defender with a ton of miles will be around $20,000.
A diesel defender will get you in the high 20's for MPG with a autobox.
A V8 petrol will get you in the teens with a autobox.
A manual transmission will net you better MPG of course.

Yea i am in europre. I'm from scotland.
I don't think i'd go for the petrol v8 because of the mpg. I'd definatley be looking at a diesel. And automatic, because thats how I prefer to drive.
Am I right in thinking the smallest diesel i'll get is a 2.3l?
I think for the sake of mpg i'd be looking at that.
What are rhe defenders like, particularly the older ones, like for reliability?

whatever you do invest in a good security system and a system to track your vehicle. defenders pre 2000 are getting nicked on a fairly regular basis.

Yea?
that would be well worth the money then.
I noticed in my last post i said i prefered automatic. Thats wrong lol.
Im a manual kinda guy.
Been looking around and i seen one near me for 2grand.
I'm not ready to buy yet, but it was just for an idea.
It looks as though thats about as cheap as they come, i seen others, with extra kit, spotlights, snorkels etc, going for around 8grand.
