Default steering rod replacement

Hi,

Have just been told I need to have my steering rods replaced, apparently I need 1 long and 1 short?? i have been quoted over 700 for the job plus parts and have no idea about any of this. I am completely clueless where cars are concerned. Any advice?

1. $700 is above many owner's threshold for tuition. You can buy a lot of tools for $700.

2. Type of truck matters.

3. The RAVE download below is the factory shop manual, has all the steps.

4. On line parts sources, like this one: Drag Link Complete For Land Rover Discovery II | Land Rover Steering Parts

or

Land Rover Discovery II Steering Parts Available from RoversNorth.com where you look at it on an exploded diagram. Note that Rovers North prices can usually be beat if you search well..

5. $700 - did they tell you which rods? Or was it tie rod ends? Good to have a written estimate.

6. If you can put together bikes, go carts, and Barbie Castles - you can do this. Last time I looked there were no three armed mechanics...

A long and short tie rod assembly runs around $180 and 20 minutes to install. Was that the only thing they said you need?

Did my front (drag or track) the one with the damper bracket for $110 including shipping to my door (long and short). Don't go to dealer - but a $15 Tie Rod Remover at Napa and do it yourself, it's easy.

Are they bent? Unless you are upgrading to HD that's the only reason I can think they'd need replacing.
Ball joints (tie rod ends) are another matter.

actually we would charge two hours to get them out cause you had to heat them up to get the tie rods out and then lube them up to adjust the toe.
