After I bought the car at 120K miles and put about 20K on it, I started to hear a noise when turning the steering wheel. I added fluid, the sound stopped. But then it started to make noise continuously, Finally, I completely changed everything including belt, pump, power steering tank, power steering fluid. I put standard power steering fluid in case the car was old, maybe the oil was thin. I was normally using Pentosin ehf. The steering has generally softened, I get normal sound in turns. I didn't see any oil, fluid leakage. But I still hear such a sound. While I hear a lot of noise when starting the car, such a sound is continuous when it runs normally. What do you think the cause could be? I did everything to do.
I used this one. but since the mileage is high, maybe the fluid is now too thin for the car, I put normal power steering fluid the red ones, this time I think it was valvoline or castrol. but is the noise related to this? I also used this and there was no difference.
What merlinj79 posted is the correct manual requirement.
However, since I've owned this LR2, since the end of 2019, I have, twice a year, drained and filled the PS reservoir with this product AMSOIL 100% SYNTHETIC MULTI-VEHICLE POWER STEERING FLUID and have had zero issues, price is quite good for an Amsoil product. Compare the heat ratings of the Amsoil product.
Another vote for Amsoil. I have not needed it or the LR2 yet but have it in all my other power steering systems from 1970 on including 2004 x350 and my 1996 van with over 700 k km. Around 12 different cars without any problems with power steering.
It might. I have had it cure a number problems, including leaks. It is hard to pick out the steering noise from others in the video. Does it change when you turn the wheel slightly to increase internal pressure? Are you sure it is now the steering making the noise?
Not just changing the fluid, but flushing the power steering rack is part of my maintenance schedule.
I tend to stick to what is spec’d. Every manufacturer of snake oil provides exceptional studies…. independent sources have my vote.
