Anti Drain Back Valve LR2 with 3.2 liter six cylinder
All,
I just wanted to share a problem I recently found on my LR2.
In the bottom of the oil filter housing is a valve that keep the filter full of oil so that the pump doesn't have to fill up the filter housing every time the engine is started.
This valve is spring loaded so that its closed when the paper filter element is pressing against it and it opens when the filter is removed. (see the picture)
The last time I changed my oil I found a small piece of rubber attached to the paper filter. (see picture)
I couldn't find a source for the part so I bought an entire housing and I carefully removed the valve from the new housing and installed it in my existing housing.
The part that I bought is for a Volvo part number 31359138
It cost about $80 shipped to my door
I can't complain 8 year and 100,000 miles isn't bad (15 oil changes)
Just wanted to share in case anyone else has this happen to them
Thanks
Paul

1. Inspect the housing when you change the filter to verify that it's still there.
2. I would assume that if it was missing, it would take longer for the oil warning light to extinguish when starting the engine. It takes notably longer to go out on the first start after changing the filter, since the oil is allowed to drain out when you lift the filter.
I think 2-ish seconds is normal, at least in SOCAL climate.

As for symptoms
1. Oil light takes an extended time to go out (as Merlin pointed out)
2. Variable Valve Timing problems
3. Variable Valve lift problems
4. Excessive wear: piston rings, cylinder walls, valve guides, bearings
5. Timing chain wear
6. R.E.A.D. failures
The problems depend on how long you operate the engine with a broken valve.
Let us know what breaks if you don't spend the $20 to fix the valve
Good luck
Paul
