advice needed please
Hi All,
I took my LR3 in for its scheduled service and whoa. Really need some help figuring out what to do now, what to do later, or if I just need to sell my car. It is like part of the family and I don't want to lose it!
It is a 2006 LR3 91,000 miles. It needs:
1. inner and outer tye (tie?) rods on the left and right + alignment = 789.00
2. differentials leaking fluid and fluid is contaminated. needs front differential = 2277.00 and rear = 1860.00
3. hub assembly (left front) 590.00
The service itself is 590.00
Can someone advise me? I am wondering
1. if I should take it somewhere else for possible lower costs to have some of this done.
2. if really need all this right now.
3. is this something that just happens at 90,000 miles or is a sign that my car hasn't been taken care of properly?
4. is it really worth it or should I just try and sell the car and move on? Its almost paid for! arg!
Thanks for any help!

Here is the service list for the vehicle. IMHO the idea of running 100K plus on something like diff oil, when you weigh 1300 pounds more than a D1 and have a diff capacity 1/3 of the D1 and more HP than a D1 is silly. Service interval should be much more frequent than schedule.

I feel your pain. When I picked up my D2 5 years ago, and was "Land Rover Green", I had it checked out at the dealer in the city where I had bought it some 7 hours from home, while I was completing work in the area during that week. I got a similar laundry list with large price tags as well. Then the tech told me what I needed to do, and what I could wait on. Still, more than I wanted to pay, but I got a few items done to make sure I could get home in good shape.
I have found now that I could have done them much cheaper myself, and have addressed those I did not have done over the last 5 yrs and 65K miles I have owned my D2 now. So, not sure on the LR3, but just wanted you to know this is common LR dealer repair sticker shock. You can get it done elsewhere in some cases, do some yourself maybe, and maybe wait on some items. I will let others give you more specifics on the LR3.

Thank you for the manual. I see that it says >>>>1. Every 10 years or 150,000 miles (240,000 km): Renew front differential oil. For additional information, refer to Specifications (205-03 ) Foradditionalinformation, referto DifferentialDrainingandFilling(205-03)>>>>
Sounds like if my differential oil is leaking and contaminated way before 150,000 miles. Do you know what would cause that?
Thanks,
tori

ok, well, I guess in a way that makes me feel better. I just don't want to be taken advantage of because I'm the Mom with three kids in tow just wanting to get the car back so we can get on with life. You know? I want to slow down and make educated decisions about the work they do. Do you think going somewhere else will save money on the service?
Yes, because many dealers charge well over $100 (almost $200 in some) an hour for labor. As for high miles no-service fluids, I don't like them because people tend to ignore them for that period of time, not checking the level, not changing them, etc. So you can drive around with bad fluid for 150,000 miles when it might have been caught at 30,000.
The LR3 has a differential that is 1/3 the capacity of fluid as an old D1. This fluid just does splash lubrication, it is not circulated or filtered. The LR3 weighs more than the D1, and has higher horse power. So physics is making the LR3 differential have to work harder, but there is way less fluid in there, and the hotter overworked fluid is not changed for 150,000 miles. We are talking about enough fluid (0.61 liter) to fill maybe a tall beverage can (Peace Tea of course). So not changing that small quantity of fluid on a more frequent basis can leave some owners with pricey repairs.
At the prices you were quoted a DIY owner could have changed the fluid 100 times.
Now many people would change the fluid and hope for the best. Some would change the fluid and go to more viscous (thicker) fluid to quiet the differential.
