Default Check engine light

While traveling on some fairly rocky trails this past weekend we forded several one to two foot deep mud puddles. After several of these submarine type encounters my check engine light came on and stayed on after starting.
Not the one with the exclamation point in it but the one that the manual indicates is related to the emission system. This was not a death nell but did get me worried.
After returning home I thoroughly cleaned the concrete like mud off everything I could see and the light did not return.
What did the mud clog up to have this warning signal? Just to know so in future that I might clean this particular part and not have another panic session.

Now have the IID tool and I think many of my fault issues will fade away. As I went through them this AM many were before I owned the vehicle probably caused by actions of PO.
