LR3 hidden winch install questions
I've read a couple threads about the install on an LR3/4. So just some quick questions for mounting the plate before I rip the front end apart. I know could answer these with things apart, but I would like to get everything I need before I do so I can dive right into the project. So please excuse my ignorance on this.
Seems 1/2" is the popular harder size for the plate to frame bolts. Four total. To do so, one mush drill out four captive nuts that originally held the bumper. Does anyone know the stock size of the bumper hardware? I noticed when drilling to a half inch, there is not much "meat" left around the mount location, particularly on the outside edge. That worries me. Warn seems to ship mounting bolts that are 3/8" grade 5. I will be going grade 8. If the stock captive size is 3/8", I would still drill out to put in proper grade 8 hardware, but I feel it would be a better setup. With that said, the tension capacity of 1/2" grade 8 is 22674 lb and 3/8" is 12360, nearly half but still ample. But if 1/2" is fine and people have tortured winches with no issues, I will do the same.
And has anyone used a grade 8 U bolt instead of individuate bolts? Not sure if a proper sized one could be located. But it would think a U bolt wrapped behind the frame part being mounted to would be ideal. Maybe?
