I did not take in it for heavy off-road and it's not my daily driver.
I bought this truck to go hunting/fishing/hiking with my sons. It mostly forest, farm roads with little streams and mud puddle crossing. It is my fun driving machine. That saying all.
Guess it depends on how fancy of a LR3 you buy but one sold here earlier this month ~ $13,000. 107,000 miles - SE.
I like LR3's and I wouldn't pass on one if it was a great deal but I'm still partial to my Discovery. It's part of me now and I haven't seen anything else on the road that I like as much. It seems as if all vehicles look the same nowadays. One sea of grey crossovers moving down the highway. No fun in that.

Interesting thread, as I've been following the prices of the LR3 (and somewhat RRS) for 5-6 years, and more closely for 3 years (when I got the RRS after LR3s were demanding nearly the same price).
I can honestly say that today, the prices have stayed ALMOST the same as what you were looking at 3 years ago - which is crazy, especially for a British car that tends to depreciate at a predictable rate.
I do think we're witnessing a turn-around due to Tata Motors and the renewed image of the Jaguar/Land Rover brand, however the vehicles themselves are also developing a cult following. My theory is that once the original owners sold their LR3s and 1st gen RRS vehicles, they've since been snatched up by the used-car market and people simply don't get rid of them.
I HAD to pull the trigger recently and finally found my "dream" 2006 white LR3 HSE (cold climate, NAV, HK Logic 7, adaptive xenons, heated windshield/rear seats, fr/r park distance, etc etc) w/ RSE (no HD package though but oh well) in awesome condition and 87k mi.. payed 16,9 which is actually a bargian. At the time I bought it, I was searching within 250 miles for these things (white or tonga green) and there were only SIX VEHICLES in that search radius on cars/autotrader.
Hopefully their value continues to remain nearly the same or depreciate as slowly, because it's wonderful for us and the LR image! It's just a real PITA to get your hands on one, so do it fast because I think it'll only get more difficult.

Well, after minimal research, I took the leap and purchased my 2005 in 2008 when everyone was relinquishing all SUV's because of gas prices. I must say for a 9 yr Old with 145,000 mi as a daily driver, to several different states & Vacations....She still looks like she belongs on the Showroom........
Truly Impressed, no horror from Texas.......

You're not crazy, but you're also being a bit optimistic. These trucks were $45,000-$55,000 new. If you're seeing them for $12,000, that's a depreciation of 75% of it's value already. Considering that, in all likelihood, the value of these trucks will never get below $4-5,000 or so if they're well taken care of, then you're looking at a loss in equity of about $7-8,000 for a nice, comfortable, useful car that should be able to give you at least another 100,000 if not 150,000 miles. Personally, I still think that's a good deal.
It also depends on your location though. The prices of the LR3 seem to stay kind of high around the DC area here. People report seeing them for $10,000 all the time, but I have never seen one priced like that here. Most are still in the $14-15,000 range.

When I was looking I initially considered same year range Chev. Tahoe with LTZ (top of line).
The LR3 was substantially lower in price than same year Tahoe.
So yes I agree. These things sold new for such high amount and dropped like rock when a few years old.
Very similar to Cadillac. New $50,000, dealer in my area sells three year old used ones $20,000.
