No Heat on drivers side Tips
My LR3 started blowing cool air on the drivers side. I could turn off the vents but the defrost would not work, dangerous. So I did some searching / reading and based upon what I read, the blender motor had failed. Seemed logical to me so I removed the old one found a replacement on ebay with the same part # and ordered it. Installed it, re-calibrated the system, no joy, still cool air. I read another article that stated the heat exchangers get clogged on the drivers side. So I boiled up some deck cleaner with oxycilic acid blew out what I could and poured the acid in. Let it sit for 20 minutes and blew it out. Rinsed it out a dozen times and re-filled with anti-freeze. Hooked everything up and guess what, no joy! I then removed the blend motor and turned the flapper by hand and now it was hot! I reinstalled the original blend motor, re-calibrated the system again and guess what, everything works perfectly.
What I learned,
1. Although it seems logical, just because one side is cold do not assume it is the blend motor. It might be a good idea to clean out the heat exchanger first anyway. I got a ton of junk out of mine and I am sure I didn't get all of it but the heater is hot enough to melt skin off the bone so I am happy.
2. I do not understand what it up with blend motors but they are position dependant. Even though the part #'s may match, they must be installed in the exact location they were designed to go. trying to debug what is going on with your heat will drive you crazy if these are mixed up.
3. I found removing the drivers side blend motor was easy once I made a small hole using my Dremel tool, see pic. You can't see the hole once the trim is all back. The key to replacing the blend motors on the driver's side is to remove the small vents, one for the feet the other just under the steering wheel. You will need to remove a small hex bolt for the foot warmer and rip out the vent tearing the rivets at the top. Not a big deal as the are a slip fit and the bolt at the bottom holds it all together. Access to both motors is easy with an offset screwdriver and a 7mm socket.
