How’s it going everyone. Today I took intake manifold off and swapped injectors side to side. I’ve noticed that Orings were cracked, thought that there might be slim chance that it could be the problem. I’m going to order new set and try to fit them. In the mean time I’ve flipped rubber orings upside down since cracks were only visible on one side. Still got the code...
but at least now we know it’s not a lazy injector. I took a picture of Bad o-rings.
so here it is

Thanks for the update vetalbig. All of this makes me more curious about the fuel pressure since the line enters the driver side and then crosses over to the pass. side at the far end of the fuel rail..lower fuel pressure might create a drop on the pass side (side we are having the issue with for 2096). Unfortunately I'm probably 10 days out from being able to get the parts necessary to cobble together a T and insert the gauge in line due to work getting in the way...

Other things I'm thinking about trying is checking for vacuum leaks in lines for power steering/brakes and the vent hose return from the charcoal canister. I might be able to get to them before completing the fuel pressure check.

Here is an interesting update. To this point, both vetalbig and I both, coincidentally, have been using the iCarsoft LR specific reader for testing. It's actually fine for reading LR specific codes and seeing what's happening. It's only flaw is that it doesn't write back to the various computers in the Rover. So, I finally bit the bullet and bought a IIDTool. It came in and I've been slowly making my way around the new interface. At lunch today I decided to clear the current P2096 and reset the fuel adaptations. Now a funny thing. After I did it, I knew the truck will take some time to relearn everything, but I ran out and filled up the tank. This code has historically set to pending on the first start up after clearing and then log as a firm code on the second start. So, first start was going to the gas station, second start was returning...No Code yet. I checked to see if it set the pending code...Nope.

So, what am I to make of this. It could still be learning everything and in a mode where it won't set for a while (I didn't look at STFT or LTFT yet...maybe later). I have a theory though (I've had lots of those throughout this process...) that in addition to resetting the fuel trims, that the throttle plate has been the culprit all along. The reason I say that is the reset that the IIDTool performs also forces the truck to relearn the throttle plate settings. I remember when I pulled the throttle body off and cleaned the carbon from it that I was opening and closing the butterfly and I wondered since then if those actions screwed with the computers understanding of it. Since the throttle is electronic, I could see how it could leave the plate in a position where more air would enter vs. fuel BUT it is still metered air - so that part doesn't make sense to me.

All of this may be meaningless until the truck gets some more miles on it since the reset and it may still go right back to the same code BUT the fact that it didn't after these 2 short cycles is a potential good sign. I'd be interested to hear from anyone (nudge nudge abran) about their thoughts on this...

I'll update as I get more miles.

Sounds 100% plausible to me. I was assuming that you were resetting adaptions after each "repair".

If thats it, you are stoked!

Default Iidtool

AtlantaViking any news on the code? I went ahead and placed an order for IIDTOOL. Either way planning on keeping the car so will need it in the future.

OK vetalbig...here's your update: I've burned through a full tank of gas, at least a dozen start cycles, put a bunch of miles in town and also took it out on the highway for a 180 mile round trip. Long story short - NO CODES. I'm sure it's had enough time to relearn everything so I'm pretty sure that this thread is one for the books.

Please post up when you get the tool and reset and what happens. I'm really curious if this turns out to solve your issue as well.

Hopefully readers of this thread will find it useful - it always drove me nuts when one of these threads just ended with no solution...NOT THIS TIME!

Default Iid

Just confirming, adaptation reset with IIDTOOL did solve P2096.
The end...
