I recently saw this from a local auto electronic specialist and it looked great. So, how is it working? I've never thought about adding reversing cameras, but if I can get Car Play and cameras on the original screen, this is the way...

I bought a package from naviplus.com.au that contained a GVIF device and a NetPlay device. These devices connect between the stock head unit and the stock nav screen to give you Apple/Andriod CarPlay and optional rear view camera all on the stock OEM nav screen. You cannot see the devices after install (well other than the reverse camera I added to the back).

The car play is working great. The camera view is kinda dark during the day but fine at night. There might be some setting I haven't tweaked yet though. All in all great upgrade.

Just posting on this older thread because I just tried a few of the external units on my 2008 LR3 without nav (it just has the storage cubby) and have some info for any others attempting this cheap but powerful "upgrade" - adding one of these units by splicing into the AUX in on the back of the radio and running the cigarrete lighter power behind the radio as well, so the install looks clean/permanent.

There are a ton of units out there now on Amazon for less than $100, including the CarPuride, but most on them are 7.3+inches wide and thus slightly too big to fit in the empty space. Also many of them have the cables plugges in the side or bottom flush with the screen so impossible to hide them. I found this one that is 7.2 inches wide and actually slights into the space with enough friction to not need a mount, and connections that can be completely hidden behind. It's the SKISEA 7 inch model.

The sound is actually pretty good and loud on this through the AUX (I tried another unit from OHREX in which the size fit, but the AUX quality was atrocious (popping sounds, low volume, cutouts). Only minor gripe is that it takes a little while to load up (about 10-15 seconds after turning the car on) Yt does have a front facing camera that I'm not using as it's just pointed into the back of the cubby....

I also mounted the small rear view camera above the hitch cover by screwing it into the bumber, and splice the cable to the driver side rear reverse light and ran the video cable up the headliner to the back of the unit.

Anyways, actually a pretty huge upgrade for less than $100 - to be able to use the rear view camera to attach a hitch, use carplay for google maps and spotify, etc, while looking somewhat integrated into the dash...

How are you guys wiring the back up camera? As in where do you put the camera? Any drilling in the tail gate.

There are various versions... If they’re LR3/4 specific, one of the license plate light modules is replaced by one with both a light and a camera. That won’t require any drilling at all but you do need to route the cabling from the left side of the vehicle up and thread it via a cable conduit into the upper tailgate. Some standalone cameras are (or can be) mounted on top of the rear window (into the plastic fascia) and thus protected from the elements.
