I replaced mine while diagnosing a slight miss on my motor a few months ago, but the new and old looked identical. Cheap insurance I guess (well, especially after what you said!)

I was checking for the clues though. I mean they hold like 8 qts of oil, for you to go empty to the point of seizing a motor, you must have generated some EPIC smoke screens! Plus usually if you can shut her down within a couple seconds of a low oil press warning, you're fine. Still kinda shocked you need a new engine due to the failure of a cheapo piece of plastic!
The smoke was pretty epic. But yes, the low oil theory is the less likely of the two. I never got a low oil pressure warning. More likely the oil caused a hydro-lock situation or at least stressed components so much that something failed.

It still could have been completely unrelated to my PCV, but that would just be too big a coincidence, and from everything I've read, these engines don't just fail on their own.

Well you guys were correct, it was extremely easy to change out. Even with my substandard mechanic skills it was very quick and easy. Thanks you Snafu for the PSA and this post.
