Default Transmission Trouble

I have a 2005 Land Rover LR3 that is having transmission problems. It still runs and drives great but the check engine light is indicating a transmission problem and it does seem to slip in 2nd gear, even though the mechanic indicated gear 3 and 4. I have visited with a few mechanics and they all say that for this type of vehicle that a new transmission has to be put in, which is $6k, and that it cannot be rebuilt. Am I getting the correct information? It really doesn't make sense for us to spend this much in an older vehicle with 141k miles. Thanks in advance for your help!

It can indeed be rebuilt for about half the price. Anybody who says a ZF unit "can't be rebuilt" is all the evidence you need to find a new shop.

We just bought a 2005 LR3 and while we have no codes popping up at present you can tell that sometimes, from a start our transmission will take a second to engage. I am about to replace the filter with the updated style and try new fluid to see if that will help. But it sounds as if yours might be more advanced. I will be looking forward to see what you learn about yours, as ours may not be far off.

That transmission lag when you come to a stop and try to get back on the gas to fast is "normal".
