Default 2016 LR4 Transmission Fault

I have a 2016 lr4 HSE lux w HD package and 120k mi, bought new-to-me at 95k from genuine LR dealer. Recently completed full cooling system overhaul at local shop. Haven't put more than 50mi on since when last night i was coming down a hill to stop light and when I hit accelerator from stop, vehicle throws transmission fault and leaves me stranded in middle of intersection (I could select R, N, D on dial and would just flash indefinitely and remain in Park). Tried several power cycles, battery disconnects but fault persists. Called the local shop and they didn't have any immediate thoughts though I do still plan to tow it over next week.

I do have vague memory some minor hesitation when accelerating from stop like at a stop light just before failure but certainly nothing more extensive.

Searching online, i am seeing a range from blown fuses (checked these and all look good) to replacing the dial, to complete TCM/refurb trans R&R.

Curious if anyone has seen similar or has thoughts for how to begin triage.

That ZF transmission is good. I'd expect much more than 120k mi. Without codes, its difficult to assess.
It does sound electronic in nature. But while you're in there, schedule a transmission service.

Well I got the scanner on it. P177a transmission friction element - A or B. Anyone see this before? not liking the 'check trans fluid level and quality, if fault persists install new automatic transmission' diagnosis....

@mth that seems to be a catch all, but it implies an internal issue with the transmission

Sound like the TCM or as guy said clutches or Braking elements.

Have you tried a hard reset?

If you want professional help nearby, searching for transmission repair near me Kingwood TX can connect you with a local shop that can diagnose and fix the issue.

Your LR4’s issue is likely a TCM or electronic shift problem. Check all connectors near the transmission and shift-by-wire dial for loose pins or corrosion. Scan the TCM for fault codes with a dealer-level tool. The shift dial itself can fail and cause these symptoms. Since the vehicle is stranded, towing it to a Land Rover dealership or transmission specialist for proper diagnosis and repair is the safest approach.

Towed it to the local ZF shop. Nice guys were hopeful might be a shorted solenoid or elec issue but nope, suspect mech failure of pump shaft. Say there are likely metal chunks that have fouled the whole unit so cheaper/safer to R&R entire unit.

They found a unit w 60k miles they we do mechatronic unit swap onto.

Not a great outcome - DO BETTER LAND ROVER!

Stuck driving old reliable LR3 with 190k miles for the next few week and will probably have to sell it to finance this fiasco.

"Suspect" and "likely" are not words used in a root cause diagnosis. However, glad you're on the mend.
