So I am new to the LR scene and hoping to be the new owner of a 2016 LR4 soon. However I seem to be having a very difficult time finding one optioned the way I prefer. I have tried my best to research the following, but I am not 100% certain based on the answers I have seen and just want to confirm before being stuck with a vehicle i cannot get to what I envision.
Can you add a tow package, along with all that would have come from the factory, to a model that did not originally have it?
I seem to be able to find units with adaptive cruise, certified, and with a 2 speed transfer case, even in the color I prefer, but it will be missing the tow assist and tow package. If I can add the tow goodies then it will open up my options. I figure of the items just listed this would be the easiest one to add but want to be certain.
Several threads indicate it can be done by the dealer for 1,000-,1,500, or that you can do it yourself for around 700-900.??? This involves buying the necessary parts for the two assembly, the wiring harness, the tow hitch insert, and having the dealer hook up to the unit and turn the tow assist feature on.
However,
I saw one post were someone mentioned possibly having to cut a part of the vehicle to get the hitch assembly in? Another mentioned the rear bumper not being correct? another mentioned the unit possibly not having the tow recovery point without it?
Then I have general questions such as: Is the gear sets different if it had a factory tow package? transmission cooler? (does it include the same factory spare, I believe HD's get a full size) What is the difficulty rating on a scale of 1-10? Any special equipment needed? (lift or just jack stands?)
If someone could provide some clarity I would appreciate it. If someone could also clarify the years and model trims these answers would be applicable too that may help others looking as well. Of course if I have missed the golden thread where all this is answered please feel free to paste a link. I was hoping to find photos or even a video but one doesn't appear to be out there that I can find.
The long term goal is to build a family overland unit. I am eager to get the ball (or wheel) rolling.
Abran thank you for the answer. However I am not sure that is clear enough. (I know, I know your wondering why) but do you mean a hitch, or the hitch insert?
A standard truck has a Hitch (mounted to the vehicle which includes the hitch receiver) and a Ball Mount (what you slide to the hitch to hook the trailer to).
From what I gather the LR4 has a Hitch, a hitch insert, and the ball mount.
So ware you saying that all LR4's have the hitch assembly already built on them minus the hitch insert/receiver?
If this is the case then all one has to have is the Insert, the ball receiver, the wire kit, and to have tow assist turned on in the computer system. Is that correct?
the wiring harness that plugs in to the wiring behind the drivers side taillight and trim panel. Than an electric brake controller if you are going all out. Plug and play factory wired up under the dash. I can probably dig up the harness part number from Reese if needed
thanks I am just blown away that is all you need other than the wiring harness and having two assist turned on. I let one or two LR4's pass be by of it. Should have checked. Lesson learned.
