I had a used engine put into an lr4 with 72k miles - used one had 69k. Now, after a couple of thousand miles in the cold it is ticking heavily for a few seconds on first start up and I am also hearing a ticking if i roll the window down and am accelerating. They may not be related, but may be. Any ideas?

Sounds like timing chain chatter to me.

 

Thanks, that is what I have read on the start up noise as a possibility, but not sure of the ticking on acceleration at low speeds.

 

Under heavy load = accelerating at low speeds

 

my indy shop said fan clutch assembly... any chance that is it?

 

I had read likely culprets are VVT Actuators or Hydrolic tensioners/lifters or timing chain... hate to throw money at a ghost.

 

Fan clutch assembly took care of both issues $1,100 cost

 

Glad that took care of it. Also wow on price, fan clutch assembly is only a $50 or so part on a Discovery or Range Rover from the 90s.
