Default Oil filter cover size

i have put 5,000 miles on my new to me 2010 Range Rover Sport HSE. 62000 total miles. Was last serviced by Land Rover San Diego at 56,000,oil service and a few other items, $1500. Rather than $300 at the dealer I decided to change the oil myself. We currently have a 2006 Range Rover Sport and a 2005 LR3 and have had 4 Discovery IIs so I sm fairly familiar with Land Rovers.

I ordered a cartridge filter and an oil plug from Lucky8. I got two 5 quart jugs of Mobil1 5/20.

My my buddy has a fluid pump so I borrowed that to “drain” the oil. Had to do an O’reilly’s run for the proper diameter tube to suck out the old oil and a 90mm wrench for the filter cover. No luck with the filter cover. I bought a universal style oil filter removal tool just in case. No luck on the universal tool. Not enough room to put it on to the cover and then to rotate it off.

i then took a run over to the local Napa auto parts store for the 90 mm oil cap. Got home, the 90mm wrench from Napa was too big. It was labeled 90mm. I measured inside diameter, 90mm. Arrrrgh.

Now I was stuck. Oil out, old cartridge still in.

A word to the wise, make sure you have everything that you need before you jump in to a project.

I ended up removing top fan shroud, and much of the intake to access the oil cartridge cover. Once the intake was removed I was able use the strap style filter removal tool. Even then, there wasn’t s lot of room. On the positive side, I cleaned up the top of the engine and inside of the throttle body while I had access.

Put in in the new canister and the cover o-ring. It was a tight fit to get the new ring seated and the cover properly snuggled up.yes, I lubed the o rings withe some oil.

Attention!

Checking the oil oil level with the on dash screen was a pain. Once to the oil service section, the oil level indicator does not immediately engage. It takes as long as ten minutes to show the proper oil level.

Got it it all back together and running. Oil Capacity is 8.5 to 8.75 quarts.

A simple 30 minute job took 5 hours. Including the trip to O’reilly’s and the trip to Napa. (All was not lost, I was able to take my 993 over to the Napa store, first time that it has been out of the garage since November. Seems like it has been raining everyday for the last three months!)

I am am still baffled by the 90mm oil filter cover issue. Are there different sized covers. Shouldn’t a 90mm wrench work. I wat to get the right tool for the next change but I don’t know why the 90mm wrench that I have didn’t work. It is stamped 90mm.

I have another 5,000 miles to figure it out.

I love the truck, so does my wife. She has laid claim to it. Dang.

Thanks. Phil

RE: The oil filter wrench be sure it's a 90mm with 15 flats.
IMHO the cap wrench made of steel are garbage, especially the cheap-o auto parts store brands.

I only use filter wrenches made from aluminum and have zero issues with them.
This works like a champ and it's inexpensive > https://www.motivxtools.com/products...nt=16796647430
