I want to know if the ABS system can be removed and a brake proportioning valve installed. It on a disco 96 that we have turned into a buggy. Not only do I not need the ABS, I also have no room to mount it. If it can't be removed can I run long lines from the master cylinder to the rear and mounted it in the back. I know the wires will also have to be spliced.

 

The D1 already has a proportioning valve, that's the same between ABS and non-ABS systems.

I yanked mine out this weekend. My ABS Modulator wasn't suppling fluid to my front calipers. I did not want to spend the $2300 on a new one or the $750 on a rebuilt one. I went to Auto Zone, purchased 6, 12" 3/16 steel brake lines with compression fittings preinstalled. You will also need 1, 3/16 brass compression Tee. You can borrow the pipe bender & flaring tool from Auto Zone as well. You will need to go purchase a small pipe cutting tool from Home Depot, Ace or Lowe's. If you haven't downloaded the Rave manual from the New members section do so and follow the diagram provided inside it. I used the Modulator mounting bracket to relocate the Brake Pressure Regulator to. I used the same mounting bolt as well. Just make sure that you get a good flare on the pipe that you trim or it will leak and you will have to go back and reflare them. Also make and install a jumper wire across the two-wire pigtail that you unplug from the modulator and remove the ABS fuse from under the steering wheel. Hope that helps.

Do not use compression fittings on brake lines. It's totally unsafe as they are not designed for use with the pressures generated in a brake system.

 

I don't think he meant compression fittings, even though he called them that. The flaring tool makes me think he used the proper brake line unions and nuts.
Using a flaring tool to create an inverted flare, or bubble flare, or whatever you prefer, and then screwing the then "nutted" lines into a union or tee is perfectly acceptable.

However, compression fittings (fittings that use a compression ring and compression nut) are NOT SAFE FOR BRAKE LINES!!!!

 

Probably, but I don't want to make assumptions with something as critical as brakes, also when someone else will read it.

 

Will this f up computer or traction contol
we will be running mostly sand but might put it on a liitle ice up north
I can make the abs unit fit if I need to but not happy with the abs on my 98 disco
so if others have done this let me know

You are right. I did not use "compression" fittings as most auto parts stores dont sell common household plumbing supplies. I am sorry that I miss-spoke. The disco is still doing better than ever.
